Tucked Under His Wing

In life, there is one thing every person wants.

Knowing they are safe.

Scared, alone, fearful, worried, frightened—we’ve all experienced these. Thinking we are not safe is a horrible feeling.

No matter what we are doing, as long as we know we are safe, it’s easy to push through. We all need that security.

And we do always have that security, no matter where we are or what we’re going through.

“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”
Psalm 4:8

God promises as long as we trust in Him, we will always have His protection. He is forever with us, comforting us, caring for us, and protecting us.

“He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”
Psalm 91:4

There is nothing that can break that security we have in His protection. Even as the storms surge around us and it appears like there is no hope, He is still there, keeping us secure under His wing.

“How excellent is Thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Thy wings.”
"Psalm 36:7

We have no reason to fear, for the all powerful, all merciful, loving, and kind Creator of the universe has us safely tucked under His wing.

No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand…

Beautiful People: March Edition

Beautiful People ButtonHere I am, doing Beautiful People once more, a thing put on by bloggers Georgie and Sky for learning more about your story characters. This month’s questions can be found here or here.

This time though is special, because it’s apparently BP’s 1 year anniversary!

For this edition, everyone is answering the first ten questions about two different characters who have a relationship of some form (siblings, friends, enemies, romantic, etc.) with an extra five set of questions at the end about their specific relationship.

Trying to decide on a single character for this is hard enough, but now two…well…not an easy task, let me tell you. After weighing out so many characters, I’ve finally settled on two of my favorite, Nehthin and Lisseria, both from an Arthurian Legend series I’m working on.

1. Do they believe in anything that most people think is impossible?
I think Lisseria definitely does. I would consider her a bit of a dreamer. I wouldn’t think it would take much to convince her of impossible sounding things.

Nehthin has been a bit forced to live somewhat out of the norm, so I think he does as well. Plus, if he doesn’t believe at first, it does not take a whole lot to convince him of things.

2. Are they strong, or the "damsel/knight in distress" sort?
Lisseria can shoot a bow better than most. She’s had a fairly hard life and has had to learn how to take care of herself in times of trouble. Though she does rely rather heavily on her brother and a handful of other loved ones, she’s not exactly one anyone could consider a “damsel in distress.”

Nehthin cannot wield a blade to save his life, literally. He’s a bit of a klutz and really does not have very many skills. He does care about people though, more than anything. If someone is in danger, he’ll do anything he can to save them.

3. Do they have a special place? (e.g. a corner in his/her bedroom, under a tree...)
Lisseria spends most of her days hunting and loves to be in the woods. It’s where she goes when she’s upset or just needs to be alone.

Nehthin was on the move his whole life until very recently, so had no such pleasure of a special place. He now has a cave under Camelot castle he visits where he secretly cares for a batch of dragons alongside Arthur Pendragon.

4. What occupation do they have, or plan on having?
Lisseria is the court’s huntress. She goes out and hunts meat for the castle’s kitchen staff as well as occasionally selling some game to the butchers.

Nehthin has been hired as the court’s messenger. He spends his days traveling around Camelot city taking messages from person to person.

Both enjoy their jobs thoroughly, though Nehthin’s clumsiness and tendency to easily forget things makes his a bit difficult at times.

5. Describe their current place of residence.
Lisseria is housed in a nice room right in the castle of Camelot where she is practically treated as a courtier.

Nehthin has a room in the castle as well, but not many would consider it “nice.” It’s a small, cluttered room, not very well suited for anyone. Though having never had a real roof over his head his whole life, Nehthin honestly is perfectly content with it.

6. Explain their last crisis. How had they changed when they came out of it?
Save for the past few years, Lisseria’s life has never been easy. Her younger sister died of sickness and she had to watch both her parents be murdered right in front of her. After that, she and her older brother were forced to flee their home and live in the woods for many years.

Despite all the tragedy, Lisseria has always held on to a happy-go-lucky lifestyle, keeping everything on an optimistic viewpoint. She mourns for her family members, but she’s turned around the tragedies she’s faced and used it to drive her to help others who have suffered. Because of everything she has been through, she now uses her life helping the ones who suffer by the same hands of those who killed her parents. Caring for the needy is a salve to her heart.

Nehthin is very similar in his tragedies and how he handles them. His father died when he was only six years old and his mother has passed away recently. He is now trying to build a life for himself and, though the pain is deep, does as Lisseria and keeps things optimistic. Tragedy is just something he has had to deal with all throughout life. He has learned to not let it bring him down.

7. If they could drive any kind of car they wanted, what would it be?
I can easily imagine Lisseria in a cute little Volkswagen bug, perhaps a green or yellow color.

I honestly cannot even begin to imagine what Nehthin would drive. Probably just a little truck or something inexpensive. I doubt he would really care what type of car he has, as long as it works. But for some reason I keep seeing him in a blue vehicle.

8. How do they deal with change?
Change is something they both have had to deal with. Neither mind it, it’s just a part of life.

9. If they had to amputate one body part, which one would they choose?
Goodness, what a question.

In hunting, Lisseria has to use her legs, arms, ears, eyes, hands, and all. It’s her livelihood and would be tragic for her if she could not, so losing anything would be difficult. She could probably deal with losing a finger if she absolutely had to.

Nehthin has most use out of his legs, he could still easily go on if he lost an arm. I’m sure he’d much prefer just losing a single finger or something though.

10. What would their favorite be at the local coffee shop?
For some reason, I imagine Lisseria would like anything with tons of whipped cream in it, and perhaps cinnamon. She’d probably drink pretty much anything there save for plain black coffee. If it’s sweet and good, she’ll like it.

While I think Lisseria would cover her drinks in all sorts of goodies, Nehthin would probably be more subdued, just taking a plain latte or something of the sort. He does not strike me as the kind to like coffee though.

Now then, for the extra 5 questions—

1. How did they meet?
Nehthin and Lisseria’s meeting was probably my most favorite character meeting to write. Nehthin had just recently come to Camelot and was out gathering firewood in a patch of woods outside the castle. When he leaned down to reach for something, an arrow whizzed right over his head and thankfully hit the tree instead of his skull. Next thing he knew, a girl was running towards him, extremely distraught, explaining she mistook him for a deer.

After explanations are done and introductions are made, the two find themselves laughing at the whole thing and kindle a quick friendship.

2. How do these two deal with conflict?
Nehthin is easygoing and Lisseria is good-natured, so conflict between them rarely happens. If they were to have any though, I think they would both talk it out as calmly as they could and try to come to a good compromise.

3. Do they have a special song, phrase, item, or place?
Later in the series, Lisseria will discover the hidden cave and dragons Nehthin and Arthur care for and they both will consider the cave somewhat of a special sanctuary.

Lisseria also later allows Nehthin to call her Lissy—a name she normally does not let people call her because it was her father’s special name for her.

4. What kind of things do they like to do together?
Raising dragons in secret! Fun stuff.

5. Describe their relationship as a whole in 3 words or less.
Sweet and genuine.

1st Blogversary!

It was a dark and stormy night…

Lauriloth was creeping through the woods, hiding in the shadows, grateful for the heavy rain covering her foot tracks.

But it was not enough. The monster found her anyway.

Suddenly, an array of bright colors blinded her. She could barely look upon the great thing. She had no problem hearing it though. Her eardrums practically burst from its booming voice.

Its words frightened her.

“YOU WILL MAKE A BLOG!”

Lauriloth dropped to her knees. “Noooo!!! How can I?” she cried out. “What will I write about? Why must you stalk me, O Blogger Monster?”

It only repeated its words, more deafening than before. “YOU WILL MAKE A BLOG!”

It seemed her fate was made. There was nothing she could do. The Blogger Monster was beyond persistent.

She would make a blog.

Musings of an Elf Header

Ahem. I could tell you what really happened is one day last March I suddenly got in the mood to make a blog, thinking it might be something fun to do and help with my writing, so I started this little thing. But that’s not nearly as exciting. And besides, that Blogger Monster is a persistent thing, I have to admit.

My official anniversary was on March 16th, but, unfortunately, I have not had a chance to post until today. Regardless, it’s rather exciting knowing my little blog here is now a year old. It’s also a bit pathetic, being as how I’ve only made 30 posts this whole time. Like I told the Blogger Monster, “What will I write about?” Here, a year later, and I’m still asking myself that question. Hopefully someday I shall find the answer. For now though, I’m afraid my random ramblings will have to do.

I’ve been thinking about changing up the look and thought it would be nice to do so for my year anniversary, so don’t be surprised if things start looking different around here.

Though I do not spend nearly as much time doing it as I should, I really enjoy blogging and look forward to another year amidst the blog world! It’s been a pleasurable endeavor!

Beautiful People: February Edition

Oh, it’s March you say? Oh my, how did that happen?Beautiful People Button

I’m a terrible blogger. I really must post more. I cannot believe it is already a new edition of Beautiful People and I’ve only made one post since the last one. Plus, I am posting this most late. Whoops…

Anyways, Beautiful People is put on by bloggers Sky and Georgie where you answer questions about your story characters. You can find this month’s questions here or here.

It’s so hard deciding which character to use for these. I decided this go round I should use one of the characters from the new story I’m going to start soon (the story I meant to start weeks ago and haven’t yet *cough*). But that brought up the question: Which one? There was 8 to choose from but I finally settled on Ethryl.

Ethryl is a 22 year old female who has been an assistant to an old time traveler from the age of 3. As a result, she has been on numerous crazy adventures almost her entire life, which gives her an intriguing outlook on life. She’s a rather fun character I think.

1. If your character could be played by an actor, who would it be?
I honestly have no idea. I never choose actors for my characters. I always thought it would be fun but I’m too much of a perfectionist and would never find anyone that looked just as I picture the characters. Lol.

2. Does your character have a specific theme song?
Not at the current moment, but sometimes certain characters form songs as I write their stories and I suspect she will eventually.

3. What's their worst childhood memory?
Ethryl is often plagued by nightmares from her childhood, but she does not realize these are memories for a long time. Once she does remember, she realizes her mother had to die in order to get Ethryl away from her crazy father. Though she was only 3, Ethryl does eventually remember this I believe.
I’m sure she has tons of adventurous stories to tell from all the time traveling she does, but I’ve yet to hear about her many tales so I don’t really know what other horrible things she has gone through.

4. If your character had a superpower, what would it be?
Ethryl does actually have somewhat of a superpower. She is what is known as a Paradoxer who can stop paradoxes from happening just by being present. Her father planned on using this power of hers to take over all the worlds until she managed to escape to a parallel universe. She does not actually know she possesses this ability until much later in her story though.

5. If your character crashed on an island with a bunch of other people, how could your character help the group survive?
Ethryl's biggest trait is the willingness to serve. Helping others is her gift. Not only in doing things, but also being a great encourager. She would immediately do everything in her power to help serve every person there, while comforting and encouraging them. She’s also not one to sit idly, so more than likely she would be trying to form a plan to escape from the island.

6. Are they married? If not, do they someday wish to be?
Ethryl is currently not married but I do have someone in mind… I think she is so busy she rarely thinks about such things, but I suspect deep down she does have the desire to someday be married.

7. What is a cause they would die for?
If it meant saving others’ lives, Ethryl would sacrifice her own in a heartbeat. As mentioned before, her heart lies in caring for others.

8. Would they rather die fighting valiantly, or quietly at home?
Ethryl has spent her whole life on one wild adventure after the next. She barely knows what “quietly at home” means. I’m willing to bet she much rather die fighting valiantly.

9. If a stranger walked up to them and told them they were the child of the prophesy, would they believe them?
Ethryl would probably just laugh it off and be extremely doubtful about the whole thing. She might could be convinced of it eventually, but it would take quite a bit of doing.

10. Do they prefer the country, or the city?
I think it is whatever mood she is in. She jumps from cities, to country, to who-knows-where on a daily basis. I kind of think she’d rather the bustle of a city over the quietness of the country though. She’s not made for, nor accustomed to, a quiet life.

You could probably tell I haven’t quite figured out this book or its characters completely. But I suppose that is the point of Beautiful People, helping us learn about our characters.^_^

Heartless Book Review

Heartless Book CoverSynopsis
Princess Una of Parumvir has come of age and will soon marry. She dreams of a charming prince, but when her first suitor arrives, he's not what she'd hoped. Prince Aethelbald of mysterious Farthestshore has travelled a great distance to prove his love—and also to bring hushed warnings of danger. A dragon is rumored to be on the hunt and blazing a path of terror.

Una, smitten instead with a more dashing prince, refuses Aethelbald's offer—and ignores his cautions with dire consequences. Soon the Dragon King himself is in Parumvir and Una, in giving her heart away unwisely, finds herself in his sights. Only those courageous enough to risk everything have a hope of fighting off this advancing evil.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary
Heartless is a Christian allegorical, fantasy story written by Anne Elisabeth Stengl. It is a beautiful tale showing us how we must kill the ‘dragons’ inside us and embrace the love of God, but told in a way that even those who do not want an allegorical read could still thoroughly enjoy it.
Heartless is Anne Elisabeth Stengl’s debut novel and I just have to say this author has so much potential. Her writing is gorgeous and story telling ability enchanting. This is my second read through of this book and it is easily put up there as one of my favorites.
Plot
The story starts out with Princess Una ‘coming of age’ and suitors arriving at her kingdom to seek her hand in marriage. Most of the first half of the book covers her turmoil with the suitors she is visited by. Being a romantic, she is not so keen on the plain looking Prince Aethelbald and seeks out the more charming ones.
Because of her foolishness, tragedy strikes when she gives her heart away to the wrong man. Before she even knows it, a great dragon, the very Dragon King, has threatened her entire kingdom and destroys her very life, herself included.
Una goes through great tragedy as she discovers what true love is actually about and how important giving your heart to the right One really is.
Characters
I very much enjoyed the way the characters were done in this story. Their parts brought everything together just as it needed to be.
Princess Una is of course the main character. I personally did not have many complaints with her but I can see how people would. She is your stereotypical, spoiled princess only caring about the whimsical romantic part of life, which blinds her from everything that truly matters. I find this actually important to the story’s plot. She has to learn and grow from her many mistakes, giving us a perfect example of how our own mistakes in life can cause great tragedy. I actually learned a lot from Una’s foolish ways and enjoyed how she is portrayed.
To save from too many spoilers I will not cover all the characters, but each one played their roles perfectly, bringing the story alive and showing a wonderful picture of our walk in life. I really have no complaints characters-wise.
Appropriate Ages
From the beginning of the book, Heartless seems like it would be acceptable for any age. But as the story progresses, quite a number of horrific occurrences take place that might disturb younger eyes.
The books seems to me to be written for teenage girls, probably from about 15 years old onward.
Conclusion
Heartless is written beautifully and tells a story that kept me utterly engaged, even during the second read through. It has a very fairytale vibe to it but with unexpected twists veering away from your classic fairytale.
If you enjoy fairytales, a whimsical tale, and inspiring stories, I highly recommend Heartless.
